Monastery of Saints Rafael, Nicholas and Irene

Information

The Holy Monastery of Saint Raphael is situated on a verdant slope of Mount Pikos at an altitude of 600 meters overlooking the valley of Axios, in the area of Griva village and 7 km far from Goumenissa of Prefecture of Kilkis.

It is a male monastery. It was founded in 1992 by the Metropolitan of Goumenissa, Mr. Demetrios and his convoy, and is the produce of great reverence for the unprecedented martyrs Saints Raphael, Nicholas and Irene, who appeared in our time (1959-1962), 500 years after their martyrdom.

It celebrates on Easter Monday afternoon and Easter Tuesday, the day when the Saints passed away martyrically in Thermi of Lesvos in 1463.

The feasts of the Holy Myrrh Bearers and Basil the Great are also notably celebrated, to whom are dedicated the homonymous chapels of the primary building complex of the Monastery.

The main temple of the Monastery is dedicated to Saints Raphael, Nicholas and Irene. It also includes two chapels devoted to Apostles Peter and Paul and Apostle Andrew.

Particular attention was paid to the architecture of the temple, which combines the Mount Athos style with elements of Constantinople city (a corrugated interior central dome, four dome satellites, a dome above the Altar, dances, chapels, an entreaty dome, an outdoor patio).

Due to its complicated and costly construction, the temple is still incomplete.
